Grimes County Greys
Commander's Letter
Compatriots
Three cheers for Fred McGilbery
for mowing the Plaza last Saturday. When he volunteered for the job I wanted to
be sure he was physically able. He told me he would have his wife do it.
According to the accounts of eye witness that must not have panned out. Thanks
Fred it gave me more time to work on the SCV race car which did quite well last
time out.
This week I had occasion to go
thru the stuff that I inherited from Dal Dreher. I was in search of a
Confederate Veteran who is buried in Oregon. In my search I discovered or should
I say reaffirmed the fact that Dal Dreher was one busy man on behalf of the
cause. I found plans for the Statue, Plaza, and Museum. Files and files of head
stone orders, settings, and dedications. Information on hundreds of soldiers. I
found two name plates for the Plaza park benches with rivets for mounting
signifying that the benches were sponsored by Belle Boyd Chapter 13, Order of
Confederate Rose. Also ran across the Christmas party sign in sheets for 1994
held at Kotts Café. 1995 was at Southern Breeze Plantation and one for 1997
held at Hill Top Lakes. This was a few years before I joined. Most of the folks
on these lists I’ve never met.
People come and go I guess.
When Dal left he left a void
that may never be filled.
Love him or hate him (I did
both) you got to admit there’s probably not five of us combined that are
willing to do what Dal did for the Grimes County Greys.
